Cars are a necessity in the world for mobility and transport, obviously, but nowhere is it more obvious than in Canada and, more specifically, Mississauga. With millions of cars teeming through the roads, highways, and interstates, one simply can only afford to be with a car in Mississauga. So, should you find yourself selling a car to a family member, a friend, or really anyone, you will need to know how to transfer vehicle ownership to ensure the legitimacy and legibility of the transaction.

In this blog, we’ll take you through the process of transferring vehicle ownership in Mississauga and how you can go about it in an official, legitimate manner. Let us start with some basics.

The Basics Of Vehicle Ownership

In Canada, vehicle ownership isn’t just restricted to mere possession. Beyond that, the documents issued by the province when you purchase a vehicle are most commonly associated with vehicle ownership. Sometimes called the vehicle title or simply the permit, this proof of ownership delineates the car’s details, including the Vehicle Identification Number or VIN, make and model of the vehicle, license number and plate issued and a small portion of the sticker of the license plate.

Similarly, the vehicle ownership document also has the name and address of the owner on it, which is what is mainly used in the process of transferring vehicle ownership. Now, we will look into transferring vehicle ownership and what it entails.

Transferring Vehicle Ownership In Mississauga

Transferring vehicle ownership entails quite a lot of processes and paperwork, including what is known as a UVIP or used vehicle information package. Mandated by the Highway Traffic Act, sellers are required to disclose the following information in the UVIP to the buyer in the form of an official document that has all of the following,

  • The descriptions and details of the vehicle itself.
  • The registration details include any history it might have.
  • The value of the car.
  • Tax information about the car.
  • Condition of the vehicle.
  • Bill of sale.
  • Finally, any car loans/ lien it might have from the date of purchase.

In order for the transfer to go through as legitimate, the process and paperwork will also include a Safety Standards Certificate, which is essentially the roadworthiness certificate issued by the concerned authority attesting to the roadworthiness of the vehicle and to the fact that the car is deemed fit for use on public roads. This certificate needs to be part of the entire process as well since the new owner will require it for use on public roads.

How Can A Buyer Transfer Vehicle Ownership?

Now, there are two aspects to transferring vehicle ownership. The first one is when the buyer does it by themselves. In the second case, the seller does it for them. Lets look at each of these processes and discover for ourselves what entails these processes, starting with the buyer.

  • Ensuring that the VIN on the documents and the permit match that on the vehicle itself.
  • Fill out the bill of sale portion on the UVIP with all the relevant details.
  • Complete the transfer application.
  • Take the documents alongside the UVIP to the concerned department within the stipulated time of the sale, usually within the week.
  • Pay any dues that might be applicable to the purchase, including the retail sales tax.
  • Show the concerned official the proof of car insurance.

This completes the process of transferring ownership of the car, and from this point forward, your name and address will be associated with the VIN and the registration number of the car.

Alternatively, this can also be done by the sellers themselves. Here’s how the process goes if the seller decides to transfer vehicle ownership for the buyer, as it happens when transferring the car to a family member or a friend in many cases.

How Can A Seller Transfer Vehicle Ownership?

The process is very much similar; however, since it is the original owner who will be initiating the process of transferring vehicle ownership, here is what will need to be done.

  • Start by getting a UVIP package and transfer it to the buyer.
  • On the bill of sale portion, input all the details as required by the document. This includes all the buyer’s particulars, including their name, signature, price paid, sale date, and other relevant details.
  • Sign the application and the transfer portion of the document.
  • Keep the license plate and the ownership paper, including the portion of the plate as well.
  • Notify the relevant department (in this case, the Ministry of Transportation) of the impending or finalized sale and request them to do what is needed.

Despite the seller initiating the process, do keep in mind that the process won’t be completed until the buyer takes the documents in person to the relevant department and submits them there. Therefore, it is advised that the buyer and the seller remain in contact until this transfer process has been completed. Should that not be the case, and should the vehicle be used or be involved in a crime or a felony, the authorities will be forced to treat the original owner as the primary person of interest and for tax purposes as well. Therefore, this should be done as soon as possible.
